ISP
This article provides an overview of the process involved for New College of Florida students who want to work with me on their ISPs.
There are two broad categories of students who work with me on an ISP. The first category is students working on individual projects, the topics for which they have chosen after discussion with me. The second is students who are, in conjunction with the CEO office, performing a mini-internship with me. Those students all do finance-related projects, usually ones which I select, after discussions with them.
I am happy to work with students who have taken one of my classes. This means that they have a set of technical skills which will allow them to complete a reasonable final project. Any student without those skills would need to learn them as part of the ISP. See below for more details.
You must have an account which allows you to make extensive use of a frontier AI model. At the end of 2026, this would be something made by either OpenAI, Anthropic or Google. If you prefer a different model, I am open to that conversation. The important point is that neither I nor NCF are providing the model. You must have your own account.
I am usually away from Sarasota in January, so most of our meetings will be via Zoom. I do not care where you are located, as long as you have a good internet connection.
For both regular-ISP and internship-ISP, the final project will be a public website which, broadly, seeks to make the world a better place by providing some sort of resource which other people might find interesting or useful.
If you want to work with me, then please reach out, the sooner, the better. We will have an initial meeting, either in person or via Zoom. If it makes sense to work together, then you will need to fill out the ISP paperwork. (Once it is complete, the Registrar will forward a copy to me, and I will sign it.) The most important part is the one paragraph description of your project. You should send a draft of it to me before you submit it to the Registrar.
The paragraph should mention that a) we expect to meet at least three days a week to review your progress; b) the final project for the ISP will be a public website; c) a few sentences about what that website will contain.
I will often meet with all my ISP students at the same time, so there must be some flexibility in your daily schedule. Although most students will be working on very different projects, it is still very useful to discuss common problems with each other.
I reserve the right to require you to publicly present your work, either at the end of the ISP or at the beginning of the next semester.
